Looking at Historical Data on an Individual Student

Accessing historical data on a particular student is an important strategy that teachers use to guide teaching practices and individualize instruction. If, for example, you notice that your new student is struggling with some of the beginning of the year assessments, you might want to access historical data to more closely examine previous performance.Generating a report through VCAT is easy and also useful if you intend to provide your school's Educational Support Team (EST) with evidence of academic performance to support your concerns. To examine historical data on an individual student using VCAT follow these steps:

1.After logging onto VCAT, you are provided with 3 tabs – Curriculum, Assessments, and Reports.Select the Reports Tab.

2.Because you are interested in viewing information on an individual student, select Individual Achievement.

3.Enter the student’s first OR last name and select Search.

4.Select the student.

5.You will be asked to Select Data Years.Select the year you wish to examine. If your students are currently 4th grade students for the 2010-2011 school year and you wish to look at 3rd grade data, simply select the year previous (2009-2010).

6.Select the Curriculum Courses you wish to look at and ask for More Detail.

7.Check the specific categories you want to look at and select More Detail.

8.Check All or select the specific sub-categories you wish to examine.Once you have selected the sub-categories, click on Criterion Summary Report.

9.Uncheck RAW and Multiple Choice then click View Scales to just view the student Proficiency and correct scores. This makes your report easier to interpret and understand.

Again, examining historical data on an individual student is easy within the VCAT system. The information gathered is valuable for teachers as they make decisions around teaching practices. It is also a useful tool when generating reports for parents or for the school's Educational Support Team (EST).
